Overall Personality:
Appolonia has all of the typical Ravenclaw traits. She is loyal, a hard worker, intelligent and curious. While she didn't have many people in school to be loyal to, she felt a certain sense of pride and loyalty to the adults and professors around her. She respects authority, though she caves easily under it. She has a hard time standing her ground and can be convinced of almost anything which is likely why she makes such a good pair with Xenophilius.

She is easy-going, and patient. She seems to go with the flow; a follower, certainly not a leader. She has wide-eyed curiosity for everything around her, but because of her sheltered life she can be extremely gullible. This is often a bad mix as she'll believe her own head has fallen off if you tell her it has enough times. Because of her curiosity she loves to see what happens when she does things that no one else has thought of doing. The results are often disastrous and have landed her in Madam Pomfrey's care as well as the care of the staff at St. Mungo's on many occasions. Still, when she gets her mind set on doing something it becomes a sort of obsession and she won't stop until it's done. She has been known to work on the same spell for months on end, barely eating, sleeping or speaking to anyone.

Some would call her hair-brained because she never seems to remember where she's placed anything, though a bit of organization would likely go a long way for her. She has a dreamy way of speaking and a keen intuitive sense. While no one would expect her to pick up on the tiny things, she is right there pointing it out. It's the larger picture that she usually has trouble seeing. She can be rather blunt and upfront with things without really realizing it.

Overall Family Dynamics:

History:
The Joplins were both quite on as far as age goes. They never had a large want or need for children as their jobs within the Ministry of Magic kept them quite busy, but when they retired in 1952 they realized they had no one to share their lives with. They tried for a child for a year before turning to fertility potions. Eventually in 1955 Eris became pregnant with Appolonia and she was born in May of 1956.

Appolonia grew up slightly spoiled because she always had her parents around, but she also grew up extremely sheltered. The Joplin's took it upon themselves to teach Appolonia her basics and did not often allow her to play with the other children for fear of her using her magical abilities which manifested themselves early on. Her parents word became law as she had no reason to question them. Because both of her parents were pureblooded wizards they ingrained in her a great fear and respect for muggles, but for the most part the X's had absolutely no idea what they were talking about when they tried to explain the way muggles worked.

Her parents were reluctant to let Appolonia go when her letter for Hogwarts came, but they didn't want to deny her the experience they had growing up so they allowed her to go. She boarded the scarlet train in 1959 with the promise made to write home every weekend. When the sorting hat fell on her head it took quite some time considering her options. At first Appolonia wondered if there had been a mistake and she didn't truly have any magical powers to speak of, but eventually the hat placed her in Hufflepuff.

In school Appolonia had a hard time making friends because she was considered to be "odd" and this bothered her a great deal. She had expected to have loads of friends, but since she grew up without much interaction with other children her own age she sorely lacked in the social department. She was shy and awkward and the other kids made sure she didn't forget it. She felt very alone most of the time and often cried herself to sleep. She hated the social aspect of being at Hogwarts so much that at one point she even asked her parents if she could quit school and go home.

Once Appolonia realized that she wasn't going to make very many new friends she decided to focus herself on her studies. She was an exceedingly bright student and she found that she really loved to learn, though she learned the best by using practical magic. Books bored her and she would rather try something until it was done than read about how it was done. Her best classes were charms, defense against the dark arts and transfiguration. She also did quite well in Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures, but because she refused to do her reading homework often came away from those classes with injuries.

There was never anything incredible to note about Appolonia throughout her years at Hogwarts. She never made the Quidditch team, she didn't partake in any of the clubs, she never made prefect, and she didn't have many friends. She was that forgettable student. If someone were to ask a dorm mate about her in ten years time, it is very possible that they wouldn't be able to recall her at all. All in all besides her favorite classes school was miserable and a bore and she set her sights on working for the Ministry of Magic like her parents.

In her 7th year tragedy struck the Joplin family after John lost his brave battle with dragonpox. Appolonia finished up school and moved back in with her mother to care for her. She died herself in 1975, a year after John due to what Appolonia referred to as 'grief'. She inherited the house in London as well as the retirement money and was left to deal with the real world which she had no experience in. She started applying for jobs within the Ministry, wanting really anything. She finally landed a job in the Department of Magical Transportation as a Portkey Regulator which really isn't as exciting as it might sound.

She continued in this job for two years until she was approached to join the Department of Mysteries in 1976 after a recommendation from her boss, Elphias Doge. She was sorted into doing experiments for the Ministry which she loved, but her job was extremely hush-hush. It was her job to invent new spells, approved newly submitted spells by other witches and wizards as well as practice and master them all. She often found she stayed much longer than was needed simply because she loved it so much. Unfortunately this job did not help her social life at all as she usually worked alone. She became sullen and withdrawn, though no one seemed to notice as there was no one there to do so. Because she was alone on a constant basis she would often talk to herself to keep herself company and thought for awhile that she was going mad.

In 1977 something amazing happened to Appolonia. She was approached by a group called "Death Eaters" who was lead by someone named "Voldemort". They had done their research on her well. They knew exactly how to get what they wanted from her. With the guise of becoming her good friends the Death Eaters got Appolonia to take the Dark Mark. Appolonia was so beside herself to have friends and people who seemed to respect her that she was more than happy to give them information from inside the Department of Mysteries. They became her family as she had no real friends to speak of and no family to go home to.

Being in a Secret Society like the "Death Eaters" was amazing and she had already learned well how to keep her mouth shut about her job, so keeping her mouth shut about her involvement with Voldemort was easy enough... not that anyone ever inquired about her life. The Death Eaters kept her sheltered from the gory part of the job mostly. They wanted her expertise in spell work and most of all they wanted the to learn the many dark spells that came to her for approval at her job. There was no need to scare her with having to actually use the spells on someone.

Life only seemed to get better for Appolonia after the Death Eaters became her friends. She was happier than she had been in years and had more money than she knew what to do with. Deciding that she would donate money to a good cause she set out to find one. She found it in the form of an advertisement in The Daily Prophet for investment opportunities. She sent an owl to the man who had placed the ad and met with him later that week to discuss his en devours. His name was Xenophilius Lovegood, recently graduated from Hogwarts and much younger than she was. He was looking for some money to start up a magazine that he said would explore the unexplainable. Appolonia was fascinated with him as well as his drive and vision. It also helped that she found him extremely attractive, so she decided to give him the money that he needed. It was a start of a long and fulfilling relationship.

Appolonia saw Xenophilius many times over the next few months, helping him with business decisions as he seemed to value and want her advice. They became extremely close to the point where Xenophilius would owl her on a nearly daily basis, but they were slow to begin dating because of Appolonia's reluctance due to the age difference. Eventually they began dating in 1978 and were married a year later in the summer of 1979 after buying a run-down house just outside Ottery St. Catchpole with the money from selling her parent's house. It was also during this year that she finished her transfiguration experiments and successfully became an animagus, though it was never her full intention. She kept this a secret from everyone except her Death Eater friends as she wouldn't be able to keep it a secret anyway; Voldemort knew everything.

They kept the newly wed feeling going on long past it's boiling point as the two were extremely in love, though Appolonia had a huge secret she never told Xenophilius; she was a Death Eater. She explained absences with excuses about work or research for an experiment she was working on at home. When the subject of having children came up Appolonia completely freaked out. She didn't want to bring children into their world, but Xenophilius desperately wanted a child. It would be a large discussion point for the next year.

When Voldemort disappeared in 1980 Appolonia felt more comfortable with having a child and became pregnant later that year. Finally in 1981 Luna Lovegood was born and Appolonia found that she truly loved her little girl. With Voldemort out of the picture it was easy for her to fall into a more family-centered role. She stopped working long hours at the Ministry of Magic and instead took a huge part in Luna's life, homeschooling her until Luna was ready to leave for Hogwarts when she turned 11.
